Celebrated hairstylist Laurent Philippon began his career at a young age, sweeping the floor and shampooing men’s hair at his father’s barbershop in France. Philippon went on to assist the renowned Parisian stylist Monsieur Alexandre. Under Alexandre’s tutelage, Philippon mastered the classical techniques of French hairstyling. While still a teenager, he moved to Paris and learned to combine his technical training with more intuitive and experimental approaches to styling while studying with hair artists, Julien d’Ys, Orlando Pita, and Sam McKnight.
Philippon is now a renowned hairdresser in his own right. As a creative consultant at Bumble & Bumble, he developed products that have revolutionized the industry. Most recently, he authored the well-reviewed history of high fashion hair and beauty, Hair: Fashion and Fantasy. Devoted to the art of hair, Philippon’s book offers a retrospective look across the most pivotal moments in fashion photography and celebrity culture. This “style bible” also contains contributions from fellow hair-pioneers, including the legendary Vidal Sassoon––in one of his final interviews––Daphne Guinness, Amanda Lepore, and David LaChappelle.
Philippon’s talent has inspired collaborations with highly acclaimed photographers David LaChapelle, Steven Klein, Patrick Demarchelier, Ellen von Unwerth, Nathaniel Goldberg, Sebastian Kim, and Karl Lagerfeld. His editorial work appears in American, British, Russian, and French Vogue, V Magazine, Another Magazine, Dansk, Dazed & Confused, Harper’s Bazaar, i-D, Muse, and Numéro. Philippon’s distinctive styling has been featured in numerous commercial campaigns for high-end clients including Chloé, Elie Saab, François Nars, Hermes, Givenchy, Kenzo, L’Oréal, Missoni, Thierry Mugler, and Yves Saint Laurent.
